Fayetteville is served by I-540, a newly constructed interstate highway providing connectivity to I-40 to the south and improved access to I-44 to the north. Located just 40 minutes south via I-540, I-40 provides the most continuous east/west interstate route in the United States connecting the region to markets from North Carolina to California. Similarly, I-44 located approximately 1.5 hours north of Fayetteville, provides important regional access to major markets in the Midwest including St. Louis and Chicago. A planned expansion south to Texarkana from Alma will enable Northwest Arkansas access to another important surface transportation link. Figures from the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department indicate that Interstate 540's traffic count is expected to grow to nearly 74,000 vehicles per day by the year 2011.

Our region also boasts another high priority corridor - Highway 412 - that connects the Northwest Arkansas area with Tulsa and Oklahoma City to the west. Future highway expansion plans call for Highway 412 to connect to Nashville. U.S. 412 traffic volumes are projected to top 59,000 vehicles per day by 2020.
